[Updated July, 2019]
When the FAA mandated that ADS-B installation on all aircraft flying in the U.S. be completed by January 1, 2020, they must have known there’d be aircraft that would miss the deadline. But it’s safe to say no one could predict that over half of the U.S. aircraft would be non-compliant to start 2020.

According to FlightAware, 23 percent of U.S. business aviation aircraft have yet to meet the 2020 mandate requiring them to be ADS-B Out compliant. And when it comes to general aviation, the number is much worse. AINonline states that a staggering 77.8 percent of aircraft are estimated to miss the deadline.

The FAA has been steadfast in proclaiming that the 2020 date for compliance will not be moved.  It’s not going to happen.  Period.

Those who have put off ADS-B installation to see if the FAA will blink may have put themselves in a precarious situation – the most obvious being that their aircraft will be grounded in just a few short months.  But for those who have come to the realization that they need to bite the bullet and equip – and do it quickly – could be faced with another set of problems.

First off, avionics shops are either booked solid up to the January 1, 2020 deadline or they have very few slots still available.  Secondly, ADS-B stock supplies are being depleted at a rapid rate and there may not be enough inventory for all the aircraft that require ADS-B installation.  And lastly, prices for equipment and installation have been increasing for over a year and show no sign of stopping anytime soon.
